Inside a Lubbock Paint Booth: How Color Matching Really Works
A step-by-step look at modern computerized color matching in a Lubbock TX collision shop — paint codes, spectrophotometer scans, and downdraft booth blending.

When PDR is off the table and a panel has to be repainted, one variable separates a clean repair from one you can spot from across the parking lot — color matching. Here is the process inside our Lubbock booth.
1. Pulling the factory paint code
Every vehicle wears a 3- or 4-character paint code on its door jamb sticker. We pull that code first, then refine the formula based on how much South Plains sun the panel has taken on over the years.
2. Scanning with a spectrophotometer
A digital spectrophotometer reads the actual pigment values off the original panel. The unit cross-references thousands of OEM variants — including tri-coats and pearls — to land on a true match instead of a 'close enough.'
3. Test sprays, blends, and a temperature-controlled cure
We spray test cards, blend across adjacent panels so the eye never finds an edge, and cure inside a downdraft booth. The result holds up under West Texas sun — not just under shop lighting.
