Aftercare Guide: How to Wash and Maintain PPF, Ceramic Coatings, and Ceramic Tint

Premium protection only performs if it's maintained correctly. Here's exactly how to wash, dry, and care for paint protection film, ceramic coatings, and ceramic window tint — and what to avoid.

The first 7 days are the most important

Coatings and films both need a curing period after install. For ceramic coatings, do not wash the vehicle for at least 7 days and avoid rain in the first 24 hours when possible. For PPF, avoid pressure washing and aggressive cleaning chemicals for the first 7 days while the adhesive fully sets. For ceramic window tint, do not roll the windows down for 3–5 days.

Wash technique that won't hurt your protection

Always start with a pre-rinse to flush off loose contamination. Use a quality pH-neutral car shampoo (never household dish soap, which strips coatings). Use the two-bucket method: one bucket for shampoo, one for rinsing the mitt between panels.

Use a soft microfiber wash mitt — never a brush or sponge. Work top-down. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with clean, soft microfiber towels or a forced-air blower; never let the vehicle air-dry, which leaves water spots.

What to avoid

Avoid automatic touch car washes at all costs — the bristles cause heavy micro-marring even on protected paint. Touchless washes are acceptable in a pinch, but their high-pH soaps shorten coating life if used regularly.

Avoid waxes and traditional sealants on top of a ceramic coating — they make the coating harder to maintain and provide no real benefit. Use a ceramic-specific spray topper instead.

Avoid harsh degreasers on PPF edges, which can lift the film.

Recommended maintenance schedule

Wash every 1–2 weeks. Apply a ceramic spray topper every 2–3 months to refresh hydrophobic behavior. Decontaminate (iron remover + clay) every 6 months. Schedule a maintenance inspection at your shop annually to keep warranties active and to catch any film lifting early.

When to come back to the shop

If you notice film lifting at an edge, contamination that won't wash off, water spots that won't come off with a chemical decontamination, or a coating that's lost its hydrophobic behavior, bring it in. Most issues are easy fixes when caught early.
